Restoration and Rebuild of the Nelly Bay to Arcadia Walking Track, Magnetic Island National Park

Scope of work
FNQ Stonework was the Principal Contractor for the restoration and rebuild of the Nelly to Arcadia Track – approximately 5.6km of Class 4 walking track to AS 2165.1, entirely out from natural stone. Responsible for supplying all necessary labour, plant, equipment and material for the works, in accordance with the contract, drawings, details and specifications. Completed within allocated timeframe.
FNQ Stonework was required to organise transport and logistics including:
- Organisation of aerial lifting
- Loading/de-rigging transport bags for aerial lift
- Communication via 2-way with helicopter pilot and ground crew to coordinate lift pick up and drop off points.
- Transportation of plant and material using barge from Townsville to Magnetic Island
- Establishment of water supply on slopes for mortar mix
- Coordination with QPWS and aerial operator to ensure track closures for public safety
Constructions works included: construction of walking tracks with, natural stone steps, mortar, stone pitching and rock armouring; Locally sourcing stone. Both Hand-placed machine works methods were used as per Class 4 walking track specifications.
Pre-cast concrete steps were included in the plan details. However, with FNQ Stonework experience and skilled trades, all naturally sourced local rock was able to be used and no pre-cast steps were required. This successfully added to the aesthetic appeal of the walking track.
